the Middle East conflict

Let's get to the truth through the media-induced confusion:

Camille Paglia

in Salon, October 1, 2000:

Many Americans, myself included, have wondered for years why our safety and security are compromised by an inflexible foreign policy that has set the entire Muslim world against us. From the 1988 destruction of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, to the 1993 bombing of New York's World Trade Center, the American mainstream media has been in denial, blaming those heinous acts of terrorism on small cadres of madmen funded by outlaw regimes -- as if the attacks were unrelated to decisions made in Washington. The U.S. is rightly seen by Arabs as the principal guarantor of Israel's military might, which Americans have underwritten with billions of tax dollars for which there are pressing domestic needs. The media rarely allow Arab views to be heard unfiltered and unframed, and too often, Arabs are portrayed as irrational or medieval, clamoring cartoon figures of no interest

in andrewsullivan.com, 15 August 2002:

I do believe that the Palestinians have been treated atrociously--brushed aside by European superpowers carving up the Ottoman Empire after World War One and again by the United Nations after World War Two.

What to do?

What to do if the US government attacks Iraq!

The Israel issue

15 July 2002 - Spreading the Secret, by Gila Svirsky, "One of the best-kept secrets in Israel is that most Israelis are fed up with the occupation, and just want to get out."

Why we few criticize Israel, by Joseph Sobran
August, 2002 - "For Fear of the Jews", by Joseph Sobran, Sobran's

Nobody has ever accused me of the slightest personal indecency to a Jew. My chief offense, it appears, has been to insist that the state of Israel has been a costly and treacherous "ally" to the United States. As of last September 11, I should think that is undeniable. But I have yet to receive a single apology for having been correct....

If I were to hate Jews en masse, without distinction, ... I would be becoming exactly the man my Zionist enemies would like me to be; a man like them, in whom ethnic hostilities take priority over all other values and considerations.

Not all Israelis favor their government's approach:

26 August 2002 - Letter to a Pilot, by Uri Avnery, Media Monitors

On July 23, one of your comrades (or perhaps you yourself?) dropped a one-ton bomb on a house in a dense residential neighborhood in Gaza. The aim was to execute, without trial, Salah Shehadeh, a Hamas activist. Apart from him, 16 neighbors, including 11 children, were killed. Tens of other men, women and children werewounded..."If you really want to know what I feel when I release a bomb, I will tell you: I feel a slight bump to the plane as a result of the bomb's release. A second later it's gone, and that's all. That's what I feel."

"That's all." Down below horrible things happen, mutilated bodies fly in the air, wounded human beings writhe in pain, people buried under the debris utter their last groan, women scream over the bodies of their children, a scene of hell, not different from the scene of a suicide bombing - and "that's all". A slight bump to the plane, and then home, to a warm shower and bed.

Is this pilot - you! - afflicted by doubt? Does he sometimes torment himself? Does he ask himself if a certain action is permitted, moral, right?

I still see before my eyes Colonel Yig'al Shohat reading from his paper, with a voice trembling with emotion, his historic appeal to his fellow-pilots and pupils in the Air Force to refuse manifestly illegal orders, such as precisely this action in Gaza.

Under these circumstances, would you have told your commander: "I refuse to fulfill this order, because it is manifestly illegal?" Israeli law and human morality oblige you to do so.

9 August 2002 - The Message of the Bulldozer, Ramallah Online

The Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) deplores this week’s decision by the Israeli High Court of Justice...In 1948 Israel played an active role in driving 75% of the Palestinians from the Land. Over the next four or five years the bulldozer, following the tank, systematically demolished 418 Palestinian villages. Since 1967, as Israel’s tanks suppress Palestinian resistance to the Occupation with increasing frequency and ferocity, its bulldozers (aided by artillery and missiles) have demolished more than 9000 Palestinian homes and counting.

27 August 2002 - Israel set on tragic path, says chief rabbi; Guardian interview will shock Jewish community, Jonathan Freedland, The Guardian

Britain's chief rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, today delivers an unprecedentedly strong warning to Israel, arguing that the country is adopting a stance "incompatible" with the deepest ideals of Judaism, and that the current conflict with the Palestinians is "corrupting" Israeli culture.

In a move that will send shockwaves through Israel and the world Jewish community, Professor Sacks departs from his usual policy of offering only public endorsement of Israel, and broad support for moves toward peace, by giving an explicit verdict on the effect that 35 years of military occupation and decades of conflict are having on Israel and the Jewish people.

"I regard the current situation as nothing less than tragic," he tells the Guardian in an exclusive interview. "It is forcing Israel into postures that are incompatible in the long run with our deepest ideals."

The Great Gulf between Judaism and Zionism, Neturei Karta, Jews United against Zionism, Paper delivered by G. J. Neuberger

The greatest leader of the Neturei Karta was Rabbi Amram Blau, an inspired and dedicated leader whose compassion equaled his courage. He could not keep silent in the face of injustice, immorality, or hypocrisy. He was beloved by Jews and respected by Christians and Muslims. Born in Jerusalem, he never left the Holy Land during his entire life. In his writings he stressed many times that Jews and Arabs had lived in harmony until the advent of political Zionism. Rabbi Blau was imprisoned in Jerusalem, not by the Ottoman authorities, not by the British, and not by the Arabs, but by the Zionists. What was his crime? He defended with vigor and honesty, without regard for his own safety, the holy character of Jerusalem against the "innovations" and encroachments of the Zionists. He fought for the sanctity of the Sabbath and actively opposed the inroads of indecency and immorality made under the Zionist regime.

Unceasingly Rabbi Blau denounced the establishment of a Jewish state before the coming of the Messiah as an act of infamy and blasphemy. Under his leadership, the Neturei Karta declared year after year that they did not recognize the legitimacy of the Zionist state or the validity of its laws.

During the first period of fighting between the Zionist state and the Arabs, the rabbis of the Neturei Karta went toward the combat lines, carrying a white flag, and stated that they wanted no part in this war and that they were absolutely opposed to the creation of a Zionist state. In his last proclamation, Rabbi Blau deplored the actions of the Zionists against the Muslim and Christian Palestinians and the grievous harm done by the Zionists to the Jewish people in endeavoring to change them from "a kingdom of priests and a holy nation" to a modern state, devoid of spiritual foundation, based on chauvinism, built on conquest, and relying on military prowess. "The number of your cities constitute your gods," the prophet Jeremiah had thundered to the chauvinist and idolatrous Jewish government of this day. Like it, the Zionists are now establishing a new status quo and expanding their position by founding new settlements in he territories occupied since 1967.

SUSTAIN Campaign - Stop US Tax-funded Aid to Israel Now

The SUSTAIN Campaign ... sent a letter to the Caterpillar Corporation on June 24 asking that they halt all sales of equipment to the Israeli Defense Forces. ... Why Caterpillar? Caterpillar supplies equipment used for war crimes. Indeed, little so vividly captures the brutality of occupation like the bulldozing of homes by the IDF with Caterpillar equipment. While there are many products that in one way or another support the occupation, one that is directly used in attacks on civilians is particularly likely to have an effect on world opinion.
